Chris Hemingson, owner and builder
The seeds for the Teardrop Camping Company were planted when Chris built a teardrop trailer for our family in 2016. Chris spent his childhood and adolescence camping, hiking and backpacking all over the northwest, and the only thing he likes more than camping itself is discovering and perfecting creative camping hacks. After several tent camping trips with our daughters, Chris decided to build a teardrop trailer for our family, and on every camping trip since then he spends time tinkering with it and perfecting its design. We think camping with a teardrop supports all of the best parts of camping – cooking, eating and living outside, while sleeping off the ground at night and having an organized place to store all of the gear. The longer we used it, the more we loved it, and the more we thought other people might love it too. After spending thirty-five years in a desk job, Chris decided to retire in order to build teardrop trailers as rentals. Now, through Teardrop Camping Company, we are ready to offer the joys of teardrop camping to you!
The teardrop travel trailer is not a traditional RV. Camping with a teardrop is best described as deluxe camping, or “glamping”. You sleep in a comfortable mattress off the ground, but you are mostly outside. You have a clean and well-lit meal preparation area. You have a stove with a quality pot or pan to cook with. You have all of the components of an outside kitchen to make a warm and tasty meal for your family.
The Teardrop Camping Company’s goal is to simplify the camping experience. We think that camping and being outdoors with family and friends is one of life’s greatest simple pleasures. Exploring nature and telling stories around the campfire make memories that last a lifetime. One of the hardest things about camping is managing all of the gear that you need to acquire, maintain and store. Our goal is to eliminate that hassle for you. We try to think of everything you could possibly need, and pack it into the smallest, lightest package we can think of - the teardrop trailer. Our trailers are built with your camping experience in mind, designed to provide every possible comfort and convenience. So all you have to do is dream of a place to go, and enjoy.
We manage all of our rentals through Outdoorsy.com. Outdoorsy provides an insurance policy for camper rental and the cost for your coverage is added to your travel trailer rental fee.
This is what a typical 4 person teardrop rental looks like before you hook up your vehicle to it. The cabin sleeps two adults, and the rooftop tent sleeps two adults or three children.
The trailer is 14 feet long from hitch to end and 7 feet wide from fender to fender. It has an aluminum exterior and aluminum frame. The interior is Baltic Birch plywood with a shellac finish. The teardrop trailer rides on two 14" radial trailer tires that are rated for towing at highway speeds. The axle is rated to 3500 lbs. For additional safety, the trailer is equipped with electric brakes and a Curt bluetooth brake controller.
Our trailers have two oversized doors into the sleeping compartment. Inside you will find a 6" memory foam queen mattress, and storage shelves for your personal gear and clothes. The two doors have slide open windows with screens, which provide cross ventilation. We also have two exhaust fans which can be turned on to help eliminate any heat or moisture.
We include the pillows, bedding and a warm, down comforter for cool nights. The trailer has a cup holder for your coffee or water bottle. USB ports and personal fans on both sides. An overhead window allows for stargazing.
The galley space features solid wood cabinetry, a stainless steel countertop and a Yeti 65 cooler. There are 4 USB ports and two 12 volt outlets. We include a 5 gallon water container for cooking and wash water, and an insulated two gallon water jug for drinking water. The lid above the upper cabinet can be removed and used as a side table for meal prep and cooking.
Place settings for four, bread and cooking knives, cheese grater, scissors, measuring spoons, can opener, peeler, cooking utensils, corkscrew, lighters and a set of campfire roasting sticks.
Dish settings for 4, including dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, cups and thermal mugs.
For cooking on the stove we have a stock pot and a sauce pan, both with lids. One pan for frying. A mixing bowl, strainer and French coffee press.
A Coleman 2 burner propane cook stove, plus two small refillable propane bottles included. The side table can be stowed above the upper cabinet when not in use.
After dinner you will need to clean up, so we include two wash basins, scrubber, soap, towels and a drying rack to set up on your picnic table.
This is the Coleman 12x10 foot Screenhouse Addon. This will fit over most state park campground picnic tables. In case you need some extra room, or your campsite doesn't have a picnic table we have this part of the Boondocking Addon. All will stow away in the inside cabin when not in use.
Four camp chairs, with the propane fire pit and 20lb propane bottle addon
If public pit toilets are not your thing, then you can purchase the Potty addon which will include a pop-up privacy shelter with a bucket toilet seat and a 5 gallon bucket. We give you the plastic liner, odor-reducing powder, and toilet paper. This also makes a good changing tent or shower enclosure.
One person took 45 minutes to set up this campsite. All the equipment in this video is available in our rentals with the Boondocking Addon.
The YETI 65 is ready for your perishables and beverages. You'll need your own ice. There is plenty of empty storage capacity in the galley for your groceries.
You must have a vehicle that can tow 2300lbs (this is the approximate weight of the teardrop fully loaded with water and food. The towing vehicle does not need a brake controller but does need a 7 pin trailer plug or a 4 pin with access to a 12 volt power from the vehicle. Also a 2" hitch receiver.
You're camping in the Northwest! Of course you will need 4 seasons of clothing all in the same day. It's ok, we have space for your stuff too.
The teardrop is small enough to fit into any campground. If it's a private campground that says it's full, check anyway! We have often found that once they know it's a teardrop they can sometimes squeeze you in. The teardrop is a good dry camp/boondock camper. There is no need for hookups for all the creature comforts of home. This is camping, not RVing. When you have found your camping spot - unhook the vehicle and go explore!
What's included?
Additional gear that we have for you to add on additional fee
Do you provide a Discover Pass?
No - you will need to make your own campground reservations and are responsible for all permit fees.
Do you provide food?
No, but the galley has plenty of space for your groceries.
Can my car tow the trailer?
You will need to check your vehicle's owner's manual to find out what your towing capacity is. Fully loaded, the weight of the trailer is about 2300 lbs.
Can I bring my dog?
Sure! We allow dogs to be in our rental with a small additional pet cleaning fee $40. Dogs are not allowed in the rooftop tent. Please do not ever leave your pet unattended inside the trailer.
What other add-on fees do you have?
The trailer and all of the gear you see here is included in your rental rate. We do have additional add-on fees for propane refills and pet cleaning, if necessary. However, your final price will reflect additional fees from Outdoorsy, which include sales tax, insurance coverage, and an Outdoorsy booking fee.
What are your "Rules of the Road"?
PICKUP/DROP OFF: When you make a reservation, we will schedule a specific time with you to pick up the trailer and then again to drop it off. We don’t operate regular retail hours so if you know that you are going to be late to your scheduled time, please let us know as soon as possible.
ORIENTATION: When you pick up your trailer we will complete a pre-rental orientation of the unit that will take about 30 minutes to an hour depending on any prior experience you have towing a trailer. Picking up a trailer is not like picking up a rental car so please plan around this when coming to pick up the trailer. Outdoorsy requires training in proper use and inspection of the trailer with paper signatures for the owner and the renter.
SPEED/SAFE DRIVING: Only travel up to the maximum speed allowed by law or safe road conditions. This is primarily for the safety of you and your family. Our teardrop trailers are fun and easy to tow, however towing any trailer increases your reaction time, your ability to maneuver and the time required to come to a full stop. Higher speeds increase our service interval and cause unnecessary wear and tear on the trailer and mechanical components that could lead to premature failure.
NO SMOKING or VAPING: Smoking or vaping (including cigars, pipes, marijuana, etc) in the trailer, rooftop tent or screened shelter is prohibited. This forfeits your entire security deposit!
NO ILLEGAL DRUGS: Any evidence of the storage, transportation, or use of illegal substances will forfeit your entire security deposit.
OPEN FLAME: NO OPEN FLAME INSIDE TRAILER OR ROOFTOP TENT. If the smoke detector / carbon monoxide detector goes off, leave the trailer immediately. Ventilate and find the source of the smoke or carbon monoxide.
FISH/SHELLFISH: Please refrain from storing raw fish or shellfish in the Yeti. If you’re going crabbing or fishing let us know and we’d be happy to provide an additional cooler at no additional cost.
TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS: Please stick to paved and gravel roads. No overland or off-road travel. Our insurance policy will not cover you or the trailer in Mexico.
CLEANING: Please treat the trailer as if it were your own. We expect it to be returned with a reasonably clean interior (we know you’ve been camping!) Before returning the trailer, please run through the return checklist on the back of this manual.
PETS: We allow pets, but an extra cleaning fee applies. Many renters are allergic to pets so we charge a little extra in order to remove all the pet hair, and dander. Our current pet fee is only $40 for the entire rental period. Please do not ever leave your pet unattended in the trailer. Pets are not allowed in the rooftop tent.
The 7-Way Trailer Plug is around 2″ diameter connector that allows three additional pins , over the 4-way trailer plug, which include an auxiliary 12-volt power, backup lights and brake control. Use this 7-pin trailer wiring diagram to properly wire your 7-pin trailer plug for our teardrop trailer.
RV Standard
Green: Tail/running lights
Yellow: Reverse Lights
Brown: Right turn/brake light
White: Ground wire
Blue: Brake controller output
Black: Battery hot lead
Red: Left turn/brake light
A 4-Way trailer connector has the basic lighting functions only; running lights, left turn signal / brake light, right turn signal / brake light, and ground. If you have this connector on your vehicle you will need to upgrade this to 7-way with power or have a 12 volt power port near the rear of the vehicle.
We have an adapter that will convert your flat 4-way to a blade 7-way. This adapter will also need a 12 volt power plug from your vehicle. Most newer vehicles have power in the rear of the car or a 12 volt plug some where close. If not you will have to run an additional fused power wire from the battery to the trailer connector.
We supply a wireless brake controller. The Curt Echo Bluetooth brake controller will connect inline on the 7-way trailer wire harness. You can also save some time when picking up the trailer by downloading the app for your phone from your app store.
